Six years ago, on 30 November, my mum survived her second and most life-altering stroke. It followed medical intervention to coil an aneurysm, and left her with partial paralysis down her right side and significant speech loss. Despite all of that, she remains the same remarkable woman I came into this world knowing.
Stroke affects 1 in 4 Australians in their lifetime, yet so many of us don't give it a second thought until it hits close to home. For me, it hit right at the heart of my family.
So this year I'm running from Smithton to Hobart, roughly 450km over 6 days, connecting the north-west to the south, two regions greatly impacted by both stroke and the medical intervention it demands. I'll be honest, I haven't pulled on the running shoes in a hot minute… but I'm keen to do whatever it takes to get more people talking about stroke nationally, including meaningfully punishing my body for a good cause.
Every dollar goes to the Stroke Foundation, supporting the research, prevention and recovery work that helps families like mine. Thanks for backing me. It means the world.
