I'm walking 131km this May for Stroke Foundation

Hi there, I'm taking on the challenge of 131km in May and raising funds for Stroke Foundation to help create a future with fewer strokes.

Every day in Australia, 131 people will have a stroke.

Stroke is one of Australia's biggest killers and doesn't discriminate; it affects anyone, anytime. It claims more lives than breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. And incredibly, up to 120 babies and 400 children have a stroke in Australia each year.

By supporting my challenge, you’ll be helping Stroke Foundation deliver life-changing programs that focus on:

  • Preventing stroke through education, awareness, and encouraging blood pressure checks

  • Saving lives by improving recognition and response — including awareness of the F.A.S.T. (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) signs of stroke — and strengthening stroke care

  • Supporting recovery with trusted information, StrokeLine, and online communities for survivors and families

Your donation is more than a contribution — it helps people understand their risk, act faster in an emergency, and find support on the road to recovery.

Thank you so much for supporting me and being part of this challenge.

Together, we can help create a future with fewer strokes.

My Updates

End result

Tuesday 2nd Jun
Just under 80kms in 31 days. $473 raised and I might top that up myself to get the team to the $500 goal.
Unfortunately my body just couldn’t top the kms up. I had a horrible last week really struggling to stand let alone walk. Then in the last few days I had a weird immune system reaction that rendered me unable to do much at all… no sleep; no food; breathing difficulties…it was an inglorious way to finish.
However; getting to 79.320000000001 was personally a difficult challenge in the circumstances and I’m super proud of pushing myself through a lot of pain and discomfort to get that far. It would have been so much easier (and perhaps safer) to just give up; or to have only signed up to attempt the half distance (65kms). Not one step I did was easy or comfortable. And the pain continued long after the walking stopped. I earned this sense of accomplishment. Thank you everyone for your amazing support and encouragement! I couldn’t have done it without you!!!

One week left

Sunday 24th May
I am struggling.
I’m not confident I’m going to get to 131 kms as I don’t have enough painkillers to mask every day.
I make a big push on tuesdays and Saturday when I take tramadol to get me through dance class and parkrun respectively… but the big pushes mean I can barely stand up the following days; so it’s a balancing act.
I have however, had some luck with my knee clunking back into place, having been out for months, so the added stability and less pain might make this last week a little easier to walk.
If only my hip and back would do the same.
I plan to get out with my walking frame later in the week if I’m really struggling, so that might help me make the distance … but I doubt it.  I think I’ve fallen too far behind.  Send me pain free vibes for this last week!!!

Half way in days

Saturday 16th May
But struggling to get half way in kms.
My body is making this very hard. I’m really battling to keep walking.  It hurts a lot.
Encourage me to keep going! Join me in a walk, sponser me.  Help me keep at it!!
Remember; I can take rest days and eventually my hip will be replaced, but there is no rest from aphasia.  It impacts every day communication 24/7 and there’s no surgery or pill that will cure it.  Every gain of function is hard slog day in day out.

First week

Sunday 10th May
It’s been hard.
Many days I’ve barely been able to stand and walk, so on the days when I have painkillers to help get through a class or parkrun, I’ve been trying to make up for the incapacitated days.
Unfortunately that often means I can’t walk the next day. I’m not so far off track yet, so still trying to push for the full distance.

Started!

Friday 1st May
Kicked it off today with a short 1.38km walk around the neighbourhood with my elderly dog.  He wasn’t the only one struggling as I was limping quite a bit.
I will possibly go out later for another walk on my own if I can, but if not, I should make up the shortfall tomorrow with parkrun and dance workshops.

It’s a start and it all counts.  Just like donations…. Small contributions add up.
The weather is unseasonably perfect with sunshine and warmth so being outside is not a hardship.

Dread and determination

Wednesday 22nd Apr
It’s getting close to go time and I’m still struggling to stand and walk without serious painkillers most days.
I’m questioning my ability to complete the full kms but not willing to adjust my goal to the half distance before I give it a red hot go.
I’m stubborn; a bit masochistic; and probably certifiably mad … and that might just be enough to perform a miracle!

Hoping someone else is mad enough to join my team too.

Winter motivation

Friday 10th Apr
Thank goodness I can include bike riding for this one, as I’m not sure if my hip and knee are going to play nice enough for me to walk over four kms a day.
But attempt it I will!!

Join with my team Aphasic Action to help raise funds for this important foundation.
Having availed of their support in 2020/21 I know how important having access to information at critical times can be.
The support is a great relief when much seems bleak and daunting.

I know times are hard right now, but even small donations help immensely, and this one is going to be a huge effort from me given my current mobility issues.

It’s going to hurt; but it’s worth it because strokes can be life changing events that affect the whole family as well as being a mountain to recover from for the person having it.
This goes out to all the hero’s who push themselves so hard to recover and thrive.
