100kms in March to raise money for the Stroke Foundation
Thursday 24th FebHi guys! As some of you may know I had a cheeky stroke this time last year (big yikes). Don’t you worry though, somehow I’ve managed to make a full recovery! Unfortunately, so many others aren’t as lucky as I am.
Although I’m now recovered, this past year has been the hardest year of my life (hehe only 21, can’t wait for what’s to come). The recovery process has been hard to say the least, it’s such a physical, emotional, and mental challenge to come back from. It is believed my stroke was primarily caused by the contraceptive pill. The clot started in my leg and as it got bigger moved up to my brain, causing both a blockage and a bleed (go hard or go home). I was only 20 when this happened to me and now that it has, I’ve spoken to so many others with similar experiences to mine.
Stroke is one of Australia's biggest killers. It kills more women than breast cancer and more men than prostate cancer. It attacks the brain – the human control centre, changing lives in an instant, and its impact extends well beyond the immediate medical emergency.
Surprisingly, the risk of clots is not really discussed when prescribed the contraceptive pill by your doctor, despite the rates of clots caused by the pill being scarily high.
It is my hope that the awareness regarding this will increase with more discussions, research, and funding to organisations such as the Stroke Foundation.
This month I have decided to run 100kms with the goal to raise money for the Stroke Foundation. With your support, the Stroke Foundation can provide support to those affected right now and fund research to help prevent stroke, save lives and enhance recovery.
