I'm walking 131km this May for Stroke Foundation

Hi there, I'm taking on the challenge of 131km in May and raising funds for Stroke Foundation to help create a future with fewer strokes.  This is very close to home for us with Glen having a stroke on June 27th 2025. He was only 43 years old when it happened. And whilst we are one of the lucky ones cause he is still with us and able to walk and talk, the lasting affects of the stroke have been life altering for him and also our family.

Every day in Australia, 131 people will have a stroke.

Stroke is one of Australia's biggest killers and doesn't discriminate; it affects anyone, anytime. It claims more lives than breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. And incredibly, up to 120 babies and 400 children have a stroke in Australia each year.

By supporting my challenge, you’ll be helping Stroke Foundation deliver life-changing programs that focus on:

  • Preventing stroke through education, awareness, and encouraging blood pressure checks

  • Saving lives by improving recognition and response — including awareness of the F.A.S.T. (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) signs of stroke — and strengthening stroke care

  • Supporting recovery with trusted information, StrokeLine, and online communities for survivors and families

Your donation is more than a contribution — it helps people understand their risk, act faster in an emergency, and find support on the road to recovery.

Thank you so much for supporting me and being part of this challenge.

Together, we can help create a future with fewer strokes.

My Updates

My Reason

Thursday 9th Apr
June 27th 2025, the day that nearly broke me!!! Glen collapsed in front of me and I knew straightaway he was having a stroke and I’ve never been so scared in my life. Partly because of what was happening and partly because I couldn’t do anything to help him other than ring 000 and hope like hell we could get him to help in time. We got to the hospital but my description of what happened wasn’t listened to the they wanted to send Glen home in the early hours of the morning. I insisted he was kept overnight and that lead to him being seen by a 3rd doctor the following morning who listened to what I described to her and she wanted to keep him in for further review. This lead to him being diagnosed with having suffered an ischaemic stroke. Had we not insisted it was investigated further we wouldn’t have found out Glen had had a stroke let alone find out the cause was a hole in his heart or that he suffered from AF.

Why am I telling this story? I’m telling it because we are one of the lucky ones. I was not having that Glen had just had a fainting episode like the 2x ED doctors tried to tell me. I described to them that he couldn’t talk, although was trying to, couldn’t open his eyes again although was trying to, could squeeze my hand on the left side but there was nothing on the right and was drooling out the right side of his mouth. I said to them I thought he was having a stroke and both of them dismissed my concerns. I’m telling you this because I want to make sure if something like this happens to someone you know, you will think of this story and advocate for your loved one to make sure they get the care and treatment needed in the timeframe needed to possible save their life or save them from life changing issues as a result of having a stroke. We are lucky, whilst Glen still has continued right sided weakness as a result of his stroke, he is able to walk and talk and we still have him with us. We know others are not so lucky.

So please familiarise yourself with the acronym FAST
Face Droop
Arm Weakness
Speech Slurred
Time to call for help

And most of all listen to your gut and advocate for your friend or family member to ensure they get the medical treatment they require
